Blogging challenge day 10

day 10: songs you listen to when you are happy, sad, bored, hyped, mad

I love music, but I don't list to anything specific for my mood, at least I don't think I do??

When I'm with the kids, I'm usually stuck listening to "the Chipmunks Squeakquel" soundtrack, or Kidz Bop. (Ella does love the Sex & the City Soundtrack and Alex loves NickelBack.. and they both love Black Eyed Peas....)

For me, I like Norah Jones or Frank Sinatra, or Michael Buble when Troy and I are driving and talking.

I love Cold Play and Lenny Kravitz and Faith Hill, the Commodores, ABBA when I'm shopping or running errands on my own.

On the radio, I'll listen to classical, country, rock, hip-hop, a little bit of everything.

Blogging challenge day 9

day 9: something you're proud of in the past few days

Survival??? Seriously, with 3 kids, who wouldn't be proud of that!?

But honestly I'm proud of a couple of things.

1.) I'm proud that Alex is basically potty trained. It took all of us, working hard and working together and we've just mastered it in these last 2 weeks. It was a struggle, for him and for us, and so many people kept pushing and asking why has wasn't potty trained yet but we knew that he just wasn't ready.

This was his timing, not ours. He had given up control of so much this past year and he would NOT give up control of this. We talked to 2 different doctors, and lots of other parents and they all said the same thing... "You can't make him do it. Just wait, when he's ready, it will happen"... and you ,now what, it did!

Alex is happy and proud of himself, and we didn't waste weeks pushing him to do something that he wasn't ready for. I'm proud of him too. He is still trying to forgive his baby brother for taking his mommy away.. and that may take sometime. But he loves him. He's accepting him... and he's growing up. We are all proud of that.

2.) I'm also proud that Max cut his two teeth. Not that I had anything to do with it, except feeding him all that super formula to help strengthen his bones and help me get stronger.

Just 6 months ago, he had fragile, brittle bones, 3 cracked ribs, and wasn't even on the chart for his height because his bones were suffering from all those months of only IV nutrition. This week, he's in the 8th percentile for height. That's HUGE for a preemie. Not only are his bones stronger, his teeth are growing, which the doctors warned us might not happen until well after he turned a year old... and he's only 10 months. I'm proud of him everyday... of how he thrives, what he's endured, and how he's just such a little miracle.

3.) and I can't forget Ella. I'm so proud that she learned to write her last name this week! Why couldn't we have a short name like Smith or Jones... ROBINSON is a lot of letters to remember and she's finally learned to do it with out looking at her name card! Ella Grace Robinson, that's my girl!

Blogging challenge day 8

day 8: short term goals for this month and why

Take a trip!!!! we are getting away for the first time since Max's birth and we REALLY need it. The whole family will enjoy this week with no school, preschool, work, dance, Girl Scouts, doctor's appointments, etc... Oh, and I'm getting a 90 minute massage while we're there... so it's sure to be worth the trip!

Once we get back I do have to actually focus on the rest of our crazy lives.

- finish potty training Alex. He's excellent at school, but still poops his pants off an on at home, so we need to remedy that, plus I'd like to start on the overnight, he's waking up dry some mornings - Ella's dance competitions are within the next month and a half, so I need to work with her and get her fake eyelashes, etc...

- dig out all my receipts so we can finish our taxes... I'm dragging my feet on this, because we'll probably owe, not get a refund and I'm not looking forward to that.

- Max's pediatric opthalmologist appointment
- get Max sitting on his own and start the crawling work (physical therapy every week is really focusing on this)

- get Max eating more solid foods (the pediatrician just cleared him for ANYTHING except honey and choking hazards)
I'm not sure he's ready, because his pincer grasp isn't working great and he gags and pukes a lot... but we keep experimenting.

- watch a movie while holding my husband's hand and snuggling... because we do watch shows or movies together.. but we're usually on separate couches, snacking or on the computer at the same time or whatever.. and snuggling is good!

- get to bed before midnight... because I am exhausted and laundry can wait until tomorrow

Blogging challenge day 7

day 7: a picture of someone/something that has the biggest impact on you

Well my husband and my kids would be the obvious choice, and of course Troy, Ella, Alex and Max are the most important people in my life.... but I wouldn't be the wife and mommy I am today if it weren't for this lady.

Here name was Missouri, but I just called her Nana. (seriously her name was Missouri Faye... she just went by Faye) This photo was taken Mother's Day, 2006... my first Mother's Day with Ella and Nana's last.

She taught me more about life and everything in it than I ever thought possible. We didn't always agree, she was a Democrat for heaven's sake... but she was honest, straight forward, and loved me unconditionally. She trusted me, valued me, was proud of me, and she always held me accountable. She was wonderful and I still miss her everyday.

Nana died the day before Ella turned one. I am so grateful that they were able to meet one another and that she saw me as a Mommy. I just wish I could still call her and pick her brain for advice.

Blogging challenge day 6

Day 6: favorite superhero and why?

Well, as a child I would have said "Electro Woman and Dyna Girl."

But these days, Mighty Mr. Max is my superhero.

I've never known anyone stronger, braver or more resilient. He's a miracle!

Blogging challenge day 5

Day 5: a picture of somewhere you've been to (okay, first you don't end with a preposition... so it should be a picture of somewhere you've been)

--------

Now, moving on, most of my travel has been with my friend Kristi... because of those great travel benefits she has shared with me.... back in the day, before we had husbands, children, and general chaos. We traveled stand-by, flew first class, and had the time of our lives!!!My favorite is Paris. We've been there twice.

This photo was taken at the Basillica de Sacre Coeur. From these front steps, you can see all of Paris and the beautiful skyline is breathtaking! Right behind that gorgeous church is la Place du Tetre (the place of art) I loved going there and buying artwork right in the city square. Some of it still hangs in my house today.

Our second trip to France... Eiffel tower

beach at Normandy

white water rafting trip to Costa Rica

Now that I have a husband and family(Kristi does too), our travel is pretty much the driving distance type stuff. Our favorite is Big Cedar Lodge. We usually spend a week there at least a couple of times a year. (last year was an exception with all our time off spent in the NICU) In fact, we're heading there next week to celebrate my birthday.

This photo is from my 40th birthday... 2 years ago. Just look at the view and the serenity. We veg out for a whole week.. the kids play, we watch movies and cook in the cabin and snuggle in front of the fire... it is a wonderful, glorious, time away from our hectic lives. Can't wait to get back there!! I already have my 90 minute massage scheduled!!!

Blogging challenge day 4

Day 4: a habit that you wish you didn't have

Well I have a lot. But biting my cuticles is probably the worst.... and eating bad stuff.

But I REALLY love some of that bad stuff... so I guess that's a habit I'm not ready to swear off just yet.

Blogging challenge day 3

Day 3: a picture of you and your friends

Well, I have several friends, from several different places since I've moved a LOT while I was in TV... so several pictures.

My best friends... Kristi, Kelly and Kimmie.

Kristi and I have known one another since we were 6 years old... in first grade at Walt Disney elementary. We met Kelly as Girl Scouts when I was in the 5th grade. Kristi and I are still so close. She was the first one to rush up here after Max was born. (of course I wept the sobbing, uncontrollable tears to her on the phone, so afraid that she wouldn't make it to see him) She was with us for that first weekend in the NICU, helping with the other two kids and just sitting with me while I held his tiny hand.

(Here she is reading bedtime stories to Ella and Alex so Troy and I can get to bed ourselves...)

This next picture is one of my faves, even though my eyes are shut and we are all drenched. We're at the top of the Eiffel tower. (circa 96 maybe???) It was my first trip to France, Kelly's too and Kristi had planned it all. We couldn't wait to see the top, even though it was a miserable night by the time we got up there....

Kimmie and I met much later in life... just out of college and working at KSPR-TV in Springfield. She was a reporter and anchored the weekend news.. I was assignment editor and anchored the morning cut-ins. We both had crappy schedules, we were surrounded by a newsroom full of idiot guys (who we still love) and we were poor. (included in this pic is my good friend Jerry who left TV for the army... he and Kimmie dated at one point)

We shared a lot of fun times, sleepovers, beer, and more beer at the Twilight Inn with all those guys.

We kept in touch.. but TV moved me around a lot... Kimmie also moved to KC. She was a bridesmaid at my wedding (pregnant with Sophia at the time) and in just 3 months I was pregnant with Ella. Who know the girl I met in an awful newsroom would become a lifelong friend, and the mommy to Ella's best friend too!?

(this pic is outside the girls' preschool... Kim had Jack a day later.. and I had Max about 2 weeks after that)

Now, it doesn't seem a day goes by that we aren't on the phone talking about the girls, or our boys, or TV, or life in dirty houses, with crazy schedules, and too much to juggle. She's my lifeline in the daily insanity!!!

Blogging challenge day 2

Day 2: explain the meaning behind your blog name

I think it actually came from a "Funky Mama" song... but I think that song may be called Mama Trauma. Anyway, when Ella would sing along in the car, she always said the ma-mama drama... and it stuck.

I am a Momma. My life is filled with daily drama. What else can I say???

Oh and if you are a mom and don't know about Funky Mama Music (aka Krista Tatschl, former channel 9'er) check her out at www.funkymamamusic.com.

The Cd's are fun for the kids, not annoying for mom, and she does LOTS of free concerts around the metro... as well as private parties. This message brought to you by me... because she's wonderful, sang at my wedding, etc...

Blogging challenge day 1

day 1: recent picture and 15 interesting facts about myself...

(from earlier this week... Alex's first day of preschool we BOTH need a haircut!)

1. I hate ham. Refuse to kiss my husband or children if they eat it and won't prepare one in my house. I did find a really dry, sliced pit ham, which worked okay for Monte Cristo sandwiches... but it's rare.

2. I can't live without my straight iron. Seriously, I have clown hair. Not curly enough to look good, just curly enough to be a pain. I use it religiously and it's has changed my life!

3. I do 14 days of Valentines. I have since Troy and I started dating. From Feb 1-14, he gets cards, coupons, and little gifts to say "I love you today and every day." It's my one sappy time of the year.. and I hope it makes up for my craziness those other 351 days.

4. I am a pillow straightener. I pick up after people, including my family when they move things, get stuff out of drawers, closets, cabinets, etc... it drive me NUTS when my house is a mess, even if there is some dust or dirt... I need things in their place, because it makes me feel as if life is less chaotic when there is some order around me.

5. I love babies and I'd love moreoif them... if I were younger, we were richer, and someone could promise me I'd never have to deal with a NICU again. That said, I think we're done with the 3 lovely children God has given us.

6. I am a homebody. I love stay in my jammies days or even a whole weekend! I love to cook and watch movies and snuggle up on the couch or in bed with the whole family. These are our best times... just talking and playing and loving on one another. We really entertain ourselves in this family.

7. I'd still like to travel. I saw England, France, Costa Rica, and several U.S. cities when I was young and single and with out kids.. but there are so many places I'd love to take Troy and the kids!! Once Max is older.... we hope to start taking trips again... probably cheaper, in the car trips... but it's something.

8. If we won the lottery, I'd still live here... just next door to some of our best friends so our kids could play every day and we mommies could chat over coffee in our pj's daily. I might hire a housekeeper to clean my shower and toilets... or someone to pick up the dog poop and mow our lawn... or someone to do laundry... and the list goes on...

9. My wedding day was great.. but I could have skipped the dress, music, family and guests and just taken the honeymoon. We had a small wedding, and I'm SO glad we did. Now, I think I could have gone even smaller. It's always been about just the two of us... and it's made us closer than I ever knew was possible.

10. I love watching Ella dance and seeing how proud she is of herself. I love listening to her now that she can read to me and helping her to write in her journal every night. It's amazing to hear the sentence she'll come up with as the best part of her day. She is growing into such a sweet, sassy, confident little girl!

11. I love snuggling with Alex every night at bedtime. We put our foreheads together... play his musical seahorse, sing songs, and snuggle with his puppy while I rub his back. It's the most relaxing time and my favorite 1o minutes of every day.

12. I really hope Max's first word will be "Mommy." Ella's first word was "Dada" and Alex's first was "Ella" so I think I"m due here....

13. Troy says I'm part of the mommy mafia, because my group of friends and fellow mommies can help with almost anything. (carpet cleaner, roofer, A/C repair, babysitter, pediatric specialist, florist) You name it, someone has a suggestion and we can get things done when we lean on another. We are a "family" of sorts. We all do things differently, but we try not to judge one another and just offer support where we can.

14. My favorite Christmas gift this year... (from Troy the techie) was my NOOK. Not only am I reading all my books digitally now... but I can check my Facebook and email from my bedroom, and it's great for the kids to read books or have a book read to them or watch a movie while we are waiting on doctors... which is a big part of our life these days.

15. I still miss my Nana...

30 day blogging challenge...

This came from my friend Morgan's blog... but time seems to fly by so quickly around here.. I thought it would be fun!

By the time I'm done with this... I'll be 42 (birthday next week) Max will be 11 months old... and we'll ALMOST be through the cold and flu season. Maybe we'll be able to leave our house again?!

So, I'm starting today... with my next post.. and forgive me if I don't keep up and post a few at a time here and there. Such is my life with 3 kids! Oh and we're leaving next week, for my birthday getaway at Big Cedar, so my computer access will be limited... that may put me doing a week at once.. but I'll make it happen!

What's not to LOVE????

What a wonderful Valentine's Day gift! I had a message after dropping Alex at preschool yesterday from a developmental pediatrician (specialist) who we have been trying to schedule Max with.

Our first appointment with another doctor was canceled, because of the blizzard, and they couldn't see him until July at best. So I called another office and this doctor asked to see all his paperwork from the NICU discharge, his pediatrician, the physical therapist, etc...

She called to let me know that after reviewing all of Max's filed and information, she doesn't feel a need to see him right now. She asked if I had any concerns that she didn't know about, but said from all the evaluations so far, his growth and development seem EXTRAORDINARY for a preemie as early as he was!

She wants to see him in August. (1 year from his due date) Just for a review... but does not anticipate any long term issues. This is such a huge relief for us. Knowing that we are growing a strong, healthy, happy boy!!!

FIrst day of school

It's been a long time coming.. we wanted Alex to start in the 3 year olds class last fall, but because of our crazy year, he just wasn't ready.

This week... he was. He's doing really well with the potty training. He had his tonsil and adenoid surgery. He's gotten over the baby brother set backs... and he was so excited!!!

He woke us up at 6a.m. with questions about his teachers, his buddies, and having his first play
date.

It was a great day for him and he made it with dry pants!! He's there 2 days a week from 9-2. Hoping next year he'll be ready for the pre-K class! Can you believe it!!?!?!?!

Thanks so much to our wonderful family at Colonial for being so patient and kind and for making Alex's first day of preschool special... even if it didn't come until the middle of the school year!

Meet the Teacher

I think he's gonna do it! Alex was finally ready to meet his teacher today and he's set to start preschool next Monday.

I'm so nervous that he'll wet his pants... he is just barely there on the potty training... but I think going with the other kids could be what puts him over the edge.

The other kids were so wonderful and warm and welcoming. They shouted his name when he came in.... they let him pick the book for story time... they fought over who got to sit by him and be his friend... one little girl even asked him to sit on her lap! (he wasn't so keen on that idea)

But he enjoyed it, he tested the bathroom in his class and told me "they have the PERFECT POTTY!"

I'm hoping everything will be a big success. I am so anxious for him to have fun and make some friends of his own!

We prayed and...

If there were a telephone line to God... I think we wore it out this year. I can't tell you how many times a week, a day, an hour we prayed for Max, our family the doctors, etc... Some days, I don't think my prayers ever stopped.

We prayed and God heard us and answered. Sometimes I thought it was the right answer... sometimes.. I didn't. But I learned to accept God's will and to trust him to get me through... especially on those days and nights, when I didn't know how to go on.

We prayed and God brought us miracles and guidance and help... and Nicole. Her milk is part of what helped Max survive and thrive. Nicole lost her two baby girls, Lillian and Addilyn. But through their loss, we were given a gift. Her milk kept Max alive when it was the only thing his body could digest.
Nicole and Shannon will always be a part of Max's life (at least I hope they will agree to that)... and part of ours. They are expecting a baby girl, in April. Baby Lydia is actually due to arrive on Max's first birthday!

But tonight, Nicole and Lydia are facing some health concerns... and they are in the hospital. We know all too well how scary this can be. Every day in the "Mommy Motel" is worth 3 days in the NICU. So we want that baby to stay put, stay healthy, and arrive right on time this spring!

We're praying again tonight.. this time for Nicole, Shannon and baby Lydia.
